Israel does not want to release Palestinian prisoners

Israeli occupation would not release Palestinian prisoners in deal to return its solders held with Palestinian resistance in Gaza Strip, Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Sunday.

He said that he does not want to “repeat mistakes” committed by other Israeli officials who signed a prisoner swap with Hamas in 2011.

Lieberman’s remarks came in the wake of the resignation of the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s negotiator over the soldiers held in Gaza Lior Lotan.

Lotan, who was appointed in 2014, replaced David Meidan, who held the position for three years. Meidan had played a key role in drawing up the Shalit prisoner exchange deal which ultimately led to the release of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit from Hamas captivity in 2011 in exchange for more than 1,000 Palestinian security prisoners.

“We must not repeat the mistake of the Shalit deal,” Lieberman said. “In the deal, 1,027 terrorists were released, among them murderers and their agents,” he said.

He said that 202 of the Palestinian prisoners released in the Shalit deal had since been rearrested, of whom 111 are still in Israeli prisons.
