Israel eyes Lockheed Martin for IT move to new Military Intelligence site

TEL AVIV — Israel has been examining the feasibility of contracting
Lockheed Martin to establish the headquarters of Military Intelligence.

The Israeli Defense Ministry has been mulling a bid by a consortium that
includes L-M to establish MI headquarters in the southern Negev Desert.

lockheed-martin-6500L-M was teamed with Israel’s Bynet Data Communications to upgrade software and prevent cyber attacks as part of the military’s so-called Project 5/9.

“We specialize in carrying out especially difficult migration to computer systems,” L-M vice president Robert Eastman said.

The Israeli business daily Globes reported that L-M and Bynet, which formed a joint venture called LB Negev, comprised one of five teams that advanced in the MI tender, reported at more than one billion shekel.

Globes said L-M’s Global Solution has sought to establish a presence in Israel that would offer information technology.

“We have succeeded several times with this model in previous projects,
and we intend to apply this model in Israel too,” Eastman told Globes on
June 4. “It includes the opening of offices, bringing in our workers,
initially from other countries, hiring local workers, and cooperating with
local companies.”

Under the 5/9 project, MI would oversee the adaptation of software codes
to advanced hardware. Officials expected that the project would require the
rewriting of code as well as support and maintenance.

Globes said L-M, supplier of the F-16 multi-role fighter to the Israel
Air Force, was expected to employ 100 Israelis for the data center for MI
over the next two years. The newspaper said the staff would be reduced when
the project enters the maintenance stage.

“There is no Israeli company which knows how to do this,” Bynet chief
executive officer Alon Ben-Zur said. “You need someone with experience.”
