TEL AVIV — Israel’s military has deemed operational its fifth Iron
Dome missile and rocket defense battery.
Military sources said the Israel Air Force has designated its Iron Dome
battery around Tel Aviv as fully operational. They said the battery around
Tel Aviv was the fifth deployed by the Air Force as part of efforts to
protect major population centers.
“There were revisions made to the battery to better handle threats,” a
source said.
The sources said the fifth battery, introduced in November 2012, was
found to have flaws. They said the flaws, discovered during the eight-day
war with the Hamas regime in the Gaza Strip, were repaired in cooperation with Iron Dome’s manufacturer, the state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.
The Air Force has redeployed its Iron Dome batteries in the aftermath of
the Hamas war. Two of the batteries were transferred from southern Israel to locations near the border with Lebanon. Another battery was sent to the
southern port of Eilat, which came under rocket attacks over the last two
years by Al Qaida-aligned gunners from Egypt.
Israel plans to manufacture and deploy up to 13 Iron Dome batteries to
protect against missiles and rockets from the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. The
sources said the Defense Ministry plan would be reviewed by Israel’s new
defense minister, Moshe Ya’alon.
Israel’s military has reported an 85 percent interception for Iron Dome.
In contrast, a leading U.S. missile specialist, MIT professor Theodore
Postol, said the actual interception rate, based on a study of amateur
videos, was no more than 10 percent.
