“It is critically important for the whole world to know we did everything
in our power, we did everything that reasonably could have been expected, to
avoid any confrontation,” Mr Biden said to muted applause. “That
matters because God forbid we have to act, it’s important that the rest of
the world is with us.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, speaking to the conference by video
link from Jerusalem, pushed back against such hesitations, reflecting the
degree of tension still present between the US and its closest ally in the
region in their joint efforts to stave off a nuclear Iran.
“Diplomacy has not worked, ” he said.
Iran, Mr Netanyahu insists, “has used negotiations, including the most
recent ones to buy time to press ahead with it’s nuclear programme.”
