Ita Buttrose’s former husband and the ABC will mediate over his claims he was defamed in the TV mini-series Paper Giants.
Alasdair Macdonald says he was portrayed as acting “selfishly and irresponsibly in abandoning his pregnant wife and young child to go and be a free spirit”.
He is suing the national broadcaster in the NSW Supreme Court over its series Paper Giants – the Birth of Cleo, shown on April 17 and 18 last year.
The drama was about the creation of Cleo magazine by journalist Ita Buttrose in 1972.
Justice Henric Nicholas has ordered the parties into mediation.
If that is not successful, the case will be back before the court in May.
In his statement of claim, Mr Macdonald says he was portrayed as being a “pitiably weak man, so threatened by the success of his wife that he deserted her and his family”.
He further says he was depicted as having “callously left his wife to care for their first child and have the birth of their second child on her own”.
Mr Macdonald, an architect, is also claiming aggravated damages, saying the ABC did not contact him before the broadcast to check the truth or facts.
