Italian taxi drivers will stage a nationwide strike on January 23 against liberalisation

(ANSA) – Rome, January 11 – Italian taxi drivers will stage a nationwide strike on January 23 against government plans to free up the sector and make more taxis available, unions announced Wednesday.

The unions, who met in Bologna, said the strike was part of “action to be taken in the face of the government’s failure to call (us) to talks and to fight the measures announced for the liberalisation of the sector”.

The unions also said they would give Italy’s antitrust authority a document on January 16 outlining all the “mistakes” in the government’s planned decree.

Taxi drivers staged protests in Bologna and Milan on Monday and in Genoa on Tuesday against moves to make it easier to obtain taxi licences.

Mario Monti’s government is preparing to approve a package of liberalisations within January 20 that will hit ”all sectors”. After approving a 30-billion-euro austerity package of tax hikes, spending cuts and pension reforms to put Italy’s public finances in order, the government has turned its attention to reforms designed to boost the sluggish economy.
