Japan has donated $3.4 million to Nigeria’s UNICEF office as part of efforts to help children displaced as a result of the Boko Haram insurgency in the country’s restive northeast.
“The UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) today received a grant of $3.4 million (or 750 million naira) – for Integrated Provision of Life-Saving Emergency Interventions for Vulnerable Populations in the northeast of Nigeria – from the government of Japan,” UNICEF spokesman Geoffrey Njoku said in a statement on Friday.
“The grant will be used for interventions focused on internally-displaced persons and conflict-affected populations in the northeast of Nigeria in the sectors of water sanitation and hygiene, health, nutrition, child protection and education,” Njoku said.
UNICEF said the grant was “timely” and would support its activity in the region, adding that the conflict had caused large-scale human suffering, especially among children and women.
“It [the grant] will make a significant lifesaving contribution to alleviate the suffering of the affected populations in the northeast, especially children and women,” UNICEF Officer in Nigeria Samuel Momanyi said.
According to the UNICEF statement, the Boko Haram insurgency has triggered major population movements in Nigeria’s northeast.
“The number of internally-displaced persons in the northeast has almost doubled in less than a year, from an estimated 647,000 in May of 2014 to what the International Office of Migration reports is now around 1.2 million,” it added.
It went on: “Children make up about 56 percent of those who have been internally displaced, with over half of them being five years old or younger.”
The statement said that Japan, since 2000, had consistently supported UNICEF’s interventionist programs for promoting child survival and disease prevention in Nigeria.
“I earnestly hope this grant will bring humanitarian assistance to affected populations, especially children in the northeast,” Japanese Charge D’Affaires Masaya Otsuka said in the statement.
“The government of Japan will continue to cooperate with the people and government of Nigeria and the international community to mitigate the conflict through non-military assistance, and to support Nigerian people affected by the conflict,” the statement read.
The Boko Haram insurgency has killed tens of thousands of people – and displaced millions – across the northeast since 2009.
