‘Juncker battle catastrophe for UK’

British Prime Minister David Cameron’s handling of a battle against Jean-Claude Juncker’s appointment as the next president of the European Union Commission has been a “catastrophe” for Britain, Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls says.

“I’m really worried about where we are. I think this weekend was a catastrophe for Britain and the British national interest. I’ve never seen a negotiation so cack-handed,” he told the state-run BBC One’s Andrew Marr show on Sunday.

The Labour politician’s remarks came two days after the European Union voted 26 to 2, electing Juncker to replace Jose Manuel Barroso despite strong opposition from Britain. Cameron threatened earlier in June that the UK would exit the EU if Juncker became the president.

Balls warned Cameron against leaving the 28-member bloc, saying Britain could only be influential in the world if it can be influential in Europe. Balls also criticized the British premier for not having a definite plan over the renegotiation of Britain’s terms of membership in the EU.

“He’s weak, he’s lost control, he’s on the back foot, and Britain is suffering. I think it’s catastrophic for Britain,” he added.

Meanwhile, senior Conservatives revealed that more than 150 Tory MPs would campaign to vote for leaving the union in a referendum.

John Cridland, the director general of British business lobbying group the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), warned that the UK’s exit from the bloc would harm the country.

“The EU is our biggest export market and remains fundamental to our economic future,” Cridland said.

The CBI head dismissed suggestions by some Tories that the UK economy would be successful outside the EU with some form of associate membership status.
