Former prime minister Paul Keating has hailed Margaret Whitlam as a remarkable woman who watched after ordinary people.
Mrs Whitlam, the wife of former prime minister Gough Whitlam, died aged 92 in Sydney’s St Vincent’s Private Hospital on Saturday morning.
Mr Keating said in a statement on Saturday that Mrs Whitlam was “a remarkable person who had great empathy for the travails of ordinary people”.
“The notions of justice and equity informed her life and made her a pillar of strength for Gough Whitlam in his life-long partnership with her,” he said.
Mr Keating extended his sympathies to Mr Whitlam and the couple’s children.
