South Korea says representatives from Seoul and Pyongyang will hold a second round of high-level talks later this week.
The South Korean Unification Ministry said on Thursday that Pyongyang had asked for a second meeting on Friday.
Yonhap News Agency made the announcement on Thursday, shortly after South Korean officials said the first round of talks on Wednesday had resulted in “little progress.”
The news agency said that the two sides’ failure to reach an agreement during the first round of talks held in the border truce village of Panmunjom on the southern side of the border “cast doubt whether the sides can hold the reunions as scheduled.”
North Korea called on the South to delay its annual joint military exercise with the United States scheduled for February 24 until after the February 20-25 Korean family reunion event.
Seoul rejected Pyongyang’s request, saying that it would not mix humanitarian matters with military-related affairs.
North Korea has time and again warned against the joint military exercise, seeing it as the main setback to the resumption of the reunions.
Last August, Pyongyang canceled a family reunion event for families separated by the Korean War, four days before it was scheduled to be held, citing “hostility” from Seoul.
The first reunion event was held in 2000, while the last session was in 2010.
The 1950-1953 Korean War left millions of Koreans separated.
