‘Landmine blast kills 6 in Afghanistan’

Ahmad Zirak, the provincial governor’s spokesman said that six members of an Afghan family, including two elderly men, two women and two men, were killed in Nad Ali district on Friday, as they were travelling from one village to another in the district.

Mohammad Ismail Hotak, deputy director of the coordination center for security forces in Helmand, confirmed the incident.

Militants use improvised explosive devices, including roadside bombs, against Afghan forces, foreign troops and civilians.

In the first six months of 2012, over 1,140 Afghan civilians were killed and around 2,000 were wounded, mostly by roadside bombs, according to statistics released by the United Nations. Thirty percent of the casualties were women and children.

The United States invaded Afghanistan in 2001 under the pretext of combating terrorism. The invasion removed the Taliban from power, but Afghanistan remains insecure despite the presence of tens of thousands of US-led forces there.

The US-led war, which has caused record-high civilian and military casualties, has become the longest military conflict in the American history.
