NICOSIA — Lebanon has selected 46 energy companies for its first
offshore exploration project that could clash with neighboring Israel.
Lebanese Energy Minister Gebrane Bassil said 46 companies were qualified to bid for licenses for exploration in the eastern Mediterranean. Bassil said 12 of the applicants qualified to bid as operators for the search of natural gas in areas disputed by Israel.
“It’s our responsibility to maintain companies’ interest in Lebanon,”
Bassil said on April 18.
The minister identified the 12 companies that qualified to bid as
operators as the U.S. companies Anadarko, Chevron and ExxonMobil.
Europe was represented by Eni, Maersk, Royal Dutch Shell, Statoil and Total, with the other firms identified as Brazil’s Petrobas, Japan’s Inpex and Malaysia’s Petronas.
