NICOSIA — Lebanon’s military has come under the biggest attack amid the civil war in neighboring Syria.
Officials said unidentified gunners believed linked to the Iranian-sponsored Hizbullah have been launching 107mm rockets toward strategic military sites in Lebanon.
The officials said the targets included the Defense Ministry and presidential palace outside Beirut, struck on Aug. 2 following criticism of Hizbullah by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman.
“No matter who the perpetrators behind the rocket attacks are and no matter what objective they have, these messages will not change our convictions,” Suleiman said.
Hizbullah denied any link to the rocket attack. But officials said Lebanese security agencies had been alerted to the prospect of a strike during the annual Army commemoration.
“Security agencies received information of a possibility of an attack
taking place during the day when the Army was commemorating Army Day,” an
official told the Lebanese daily An Nahar on Aug. 3.
Hours earlier, Suleiman expressed unprecedented criticism of Hizbullah.
The president, a former military chief of staff, said he opposed the
deployment of thousands of Hizbullah troops fighting for the regime of
Syrian President Bashar Assad.
The Lebanese Army has been battling insurgents throughout the country.
On Aug. 3, at least two people were killed when Army troops clashed with
fugitive gunmen in the eastern city of Baalbek, dominated by Hizbullah.
“A woman was killed and five people were hurt as an exchange of gunfire
erupted during an attempt by an Army patrol to arrest the fugitive Hamza Ali
Saadallah Zoaiter near Al Tatri Hospital in the Baalbek neighborhood of Al
Sharawneh,” Lebanon’s official National News Agency said.
