Libya to hold elections on June 25

The Libyan interim parliament has announced that it is to hold legislative elections on June 25.

“It has been decided that Wednesday, June 25, will be [the] date for the election of parliament,” Salah al-Makhzoum, the deputy vice president of Libya’s General National Congress (GNC), said on Thursday.

Based on Libya’s political transition plan, people will elect a House of Representatives later this year to replace the current interim parliament, GNC. However, the schedule has been postponed several times due to the simmering tensions in the country.

The recent political crisis began in Libya on May 16 after renegade army units loyal to retired General Khalifa Haftar launched an air and ground operation in Benghazi to force powerful militias out. The same forces attacked the GNC building in Tripoli and suspended its work on May 18.

The government says Haftar’s loyalists did not have the mandate to carry out the operation, calling it an “attempted coup.”

The retired general has accused the Libyan government of failing the Libyan people, saying that the next government should prevent the country from becoming a “hideout for terrorists.”

Haftar has garnered support from certain elements of the military and political elite. State officials, including the Libyan Culture Minister Habib Amin, have announced support for him. The head of Libya’s navy, General Hassan Abu-Shannaq, has also declared his support for the operations by Haftar’s loyalists.

Nearly three years after the fall of former dictator Muammar Gaddafi, Libya is still grappling with insecurity.
