The Lithuanian president has vowed military assistance for Kiev, criticizing what she called Russia’s “terrorist” interference in eastern Ukraine.
During a meeting with Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko in Kiev on Monday, Dalia Grybauskaite, pledged that the Baltic state would use “all support available” to assist Ukraine militarily.
The Lithuanian leader also said no one should be given the right to stop Ukraine if it wants to join NATO.
Grybauskaite further claimed that Russia was conducting secret activities in Ukraine that amount to “terrorism.”
“Sending soldiers without identification tags, sending weaponry without identification and supporting terrorists — it is terrorist behavior,” she said.
For his part, Poroshenko said the military aid includes providing weapons to Ukrainian forces and training Kiev’s troops, adding, “It is a concrete demonstration of support to Ukraine, which has found itself in a very difficult situation because of the war unleashed by the aggressor in the east of Ukraine.”
Poroshenko added that Ukrainian membership in NATO could eventually be decided at a nationwide referendum when all the necessary economic and anti-corruption changes have been made.
Ukraine’s mainly Russian-speaking regions in the east have witnessed deadly clashes between pro-Russia forces and the Ukrainian army since Kiev launched military operations to silence the pro-Moscow protests in mid-April.
The West and Kiev accuse Moscow of supporting pro-Moscow activists. Russia has dismissed the allegations.
According to the latest figures by the United Nations, more than 4,300 people have been killed in the fighting. In addition, nearly a million people have been forced to flee their homes.
