Man in hospital after Cowan break-in

A man is in hospital after he barricaded himself inside cricketer Ed Cowan’s family home in eastern Sydney.

Police received a call just before 1pm yesterday after neighbours are believed to have seen a man climbing through the window of the Darling Point home.

When officers arrived and tried to arrest the man, he barricaded himself inside the home and threatened to harm himself, a police spokesman said.

A stand-off ensued before officers from the tactical operations squad stormed the premises and arrested the man.

Police say it’s believed he was not armed, despite his claims to the contrary.

The home invasion comes a day after it was announced that Cowan would join the Australian cricket team squad for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

His father Richard Cowan said Wednesday’s announcement followed by the home intrusion had made for an “eventful 24 hours”.

“Since Ed was selected I’ve had about 350 phone calls,” Mr Cowan told News Limited outside his home.

“Neighbours rang me and said there were police all around my home.

“I quickly rang my wife Janno and luckily she was out having lunch.”

Mr Cowan was philosophical about the break-in, describing it as a random event.

“It was obviously very random and the man had no idea of whose house it was,” Mr Cowan told the Seven Network.

“Look, it was really quite a minor matter and the good thing is no one got hurt.

“To have this happen has spoiled the day, but that’s life.”

The distressed man was treated by paramedics and then taken to St Vincent’s Hospital for assessment, but no charges have yet been laid, police said.

Superintendent Jason Joyce from Rose Bay Local Area Command said it was a difficult situation for police.

“(The man) did make threats at the time,” Supt Joyce told the network.

“He was locked away in the bedroom, so it was quite difficult for the police to know whether he was armed or not.”
