A fire has gutted a Melbourne church and community centre overnight.
It is thought a smouldering candle sparked the blaze at the Maltese Community Centre in Parkville about 1:30am AEST today.
The Metropolitan Fire Brigade’s Damian O’Toole says four people were evacuated.
“When we arrived, we evacuated four people in an attached residence,” he said.
“We found the fire inside a meeting room and the cause of the fire was determined by a candle.
“It’s just a timely reminder that over Easter just don’t leave these things unattended.”
He says the fire was contained in the one room, and the candle had been left smouldering for approximately five hours.
