Turkey Supreme Court: Rapists can avoid prison by marrying victims

Thousands of rapists and child abusers in Turkey are avoiding imprisonment by marrying their victims, according to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet.

It is the leader of the Appeals Committee of Turkey’s Supreme Court, Mustafa Demirdag, who is warning of what he believes is an unacceptable practice.

He explains that the government has registered around 3,000 such marriages. Some of the marriages have been between adult men and girls as young as five years old. In 2013 there were 181,000 child brides (girls under 17) in Turkey.

In one case, a girl was kidnapped and gang raped by three men. But when one of the men married the victim, the charges against all three men were lifted, writes the newspaper.

– It is evil to force someone to marry a person she did not want to marry. And then force her to live the rest of her life with him, says Demirdag, according to the newspaper.

The statements came during a hearing in a parliamentary commission that investigates and tries to prevent sex crimes in the country.

Turkey does not seem to be able to stop the steadily increasing violence against women in the country. Never before have so many Turkish women fled their violent men for beatings and rape in the home, according to statistics from 2015, reports DB.

Also, Reuters has previously reported that 300 women were killed in Turkey in 2015. Most of them were killed by their husbands, boyfriends or other family members, so-called honour-killings, according to the news agency.
