Militants are firing on the main election commission’s office in the Afghan capital, Kabul, from a neighboring building they’ve taken over, local police say.
“Four suicide bombers armed with light and heavy weapons have
entered a building near the IEC headquarters and are shooting
towards the IEC compound and at passers by,” Mohammad Zahir,
the Kabul police chief told Reuters at the scene.
RT’s Lucy Kafanov is at the scene as well.

Police representative Jan Agha says the assailants did not enter
the International Election Commission’s compound, but are
operating from a distance of 500 meters from the building while
hiding out in a three-story house.
“I am here… the attack is going on around the IEC
compound,” Reuters cited Noor Mohammed, a commission
official, as saying by phone from a safe room inside the building
at the time the shooting started.

The attack started with an explosion, followed by gunfire, police
and commission officials at the scene said.
The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the assault, the
second of such kind in a week.
Noor said the situation stabilized as local security forces took
control of the building, bringing people inside to safety.
It is at unknown at this point why the insurgents picked this
particular building to stage their attack from, but police say it
is privately owned.
“We can only confirm that a number of armed insurgents have
entered a building close to the Independent Election
Commission,” Kabul’s police chief spokesman Hashmat
Stanekzai said.

While this is the second attack on an election office in Kabul
this week, Afghanistan gets its fair share of terrorist activity
almost daily. On Friday, the country’s security forces recaptured a guest house used by an American aid
group that was bombed and then seized by Taliban insurgents in an
upscale residential part of Kabul.
One local child was killed, while the four foreigners in the
house were freed alive and well.
Also, last week, nine people, including an AFP journalist and an
election observer, were killed in a highly secured hotel in the
capital before local security forces rushed election observers to
safety in armored vehicles and the situation was stabilized.
The IEC is located in a busy area housing many headquarters of
international organizations, as well as that of the United
Nations Office Complex in Afghanistan (UNOCA). Its staff has also
been told to secure themselves inside safe rooms for the time
being.
Presidential elections are coming up in a week, as the US
prepares to pull out and a power handover is to happen in late
2014. The Taliban have been stepping up attacks as they promised,
believing the elections to be a Western-backed “sham.”
