It is both a feel-good and a feel-outraged story. The part that will make animal lovers feel positive is that a 12-week-old puppy that was left unattended in a car on an impound lot for nearly a month is on the road to recovery. The part that will cause rage is that an atrocity like this was permitted to happen in the first place.

The St. Louis Post Dispatch reports that the puppy, named Kia by staff workers at the Kansas City, Mo., animal shelter were she was taken, survived by eating trash left in the car. The terrier and schnauzer mix didn’t have access to water, however, and was severely dehydrated and malnourished when first discovered.
Yahoo! News notes that a worker at an impound lot was tagging cars for auction when the puppy jumped on top of the dashboard of the Chevy Suburban in which she was trapped. The lot attendant then called the police, who broke into the impounded vehicle to rescue her. The car had been sitting on the lot since April 8.
The Kansas City Star writes that on May 1, the owner of the vehicle, who has not been publicly named, showed up to inspect the car. The individual reportedly made no mention of owning a dog or of the fact that the dog was a prisoner inside the vehicle. The owner did not have keys to the car at the time he visited, so it is presumed he left to retrieve. However, the man never returned.
A third newspaper, The Arizona Republic, maintains that dogs generally are unable to survive more than two or three days without water, requiring twice as much hydration as food on any given day. Veterinarian Billie Deam told the Star:
Without an appreciable amount of water, it’s pretty miraculous for a puppy to survive three weeks in a car. Physiologically it’s possible, depending on what she was eating to survive on. But it’s really stretching the outer limits of what’s possible.
What Kia ate to survive was trash left in the car following a visit to McDonald’s.
A spokeswoman at the animal shelter that is caring for the pooch said she will need more time to heal but that, once she is ready, she will placed for adoption. The Kansas Pet Project says it is working on finding her a foster home.
