When Stevie Wonder performed the final number on the 2013 ACM Awards on Sunday night, April 7th, Miranda Lambert was preparing to leave the MGM Grand Garden Arena with four shiny, new ACM Awards in tow.
The “Mama’s Broken Heart” singer won her fourth consecutive Female Artist of the Year award despite saying she thought another artist deserved it more. She also won three awards for last year’s hit song, “Over You”, which she co-wrote with her husband, Blake Shelton in memory of his brother.
Upon winning Song of the Year, which is an award for the songwriter, Blake Shelton did all of the talking. When Miranda Lambert’s name was called again later for Single Record of the Year, she took the opportunity to express her appreciation for being recognized as a songwriter, not just an artist.
In an ACM Awards press conference, Miranda Lambert shared that songwriting has been a passion of hers for a long time. She said that her dad is a singer-songwriter and she grew up listening to his songs. The singer confessed that because her dad would sing his own songs, but also those of Merle Haggard, David Allan Coe and others, she couldn’t tell if the songs were her dad’s or those of another artist. She believes that listening to her dad instilled in her a deep love for songwriting and to this day it’s been in her blood. It’s probably safe to say that the millions of people who call themselves Ran Fans, are quite happy songwriting is in her DNA as well.
