Lifesaving authorities wasted $7000 searching for a missing swimmer in Sydney who was at home sleeping off a hangover.
The 30-year-old man was reported missing by a friend after he disappeared during a New Year’s swim at Bondi Beach late last night.
Police say they were told two men, both aged 30, went for a swim at the northern end of Bondi Beach just before 8pm (AEDT) on Sunday.
One of the men returned to shore and became concerned after losing sight of his mate.
The missing man was said to have been drinking and affected by alcohol when he entered the water.
His personal belongings, including a shirt and wallet, were found on the sand.
A search of the area, involving police, local lifeguards and the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter, failed to find him.
The search was suspended just after 10.15pm and was due to resume on Monday morning.
But shortly before 5am police heard from the missing man’s mother and officers went to an address in Bondi where they found him safe and well.
The man told police he had no recollection of the previous night.
