MMA Fighter Alex Caceres Talks About Returning To The Self

by Faye Sakellaridis

In this 4 minute post-fight interview, UFC fighter Alex Caceres blindsides Ariel Helwani with talk of spirituality, stages of enlightenment, and returning to nature to find one’s self. After this interview, Caceres may just be our favorite MMA fighter here at Reality Sandwich.

He’s environmentally conscious, with plans to invest his fight money in some land in Oregon, grow his own foods and raise his own livestock, look into new solar panel technology, and make it as “self-efficient” as possible.

“I’m trying to find myself man,” Caceres says. “I don’t want what everyone else wants, or what they think they want, which is the clothes, the cars, the big house and what not.”

When asked where this new Alex Caceres came from, he explains that he had to do a lot of soul searching. He expresses the desire to return to his roots, the “self” that so many of us lose in the process of growing up.

When you were a kid, “you wanted to be something incredible,” he says. “You were a dreamer. And I think we lost that a little along the way.”

This kind of outlook isn’t entirely new in the world of martial arts. Bruce Lee’s philosophies on fighting are broader metaphors for living a mindful existence, and professional boxer Lucia Rijker is a Buddhist who dedicates time to meditation and chanting daily.
