Moscow: 21K marched in Memory of slain Boris Nemtsov

nsnbc : An estimated 21,000 participated in a mourning march for the slain Russian politician Boris Nemtsov on Sunday. Nemtsov was gunned down in central Moscow on Saturday. The march was held in cooperation with Moscow authorities which had granted a permit for a 50,000 person march. The assassination prompts questions about who would benefit from the assassination.

Moscow police estimated that some 21,000 persons participated in the mourning march for Boris Nemtsov on Sunday. The mourning participants marched from the Kitai-Gorod metro station to the Bolshoy Moskvoretsky Bridge where Nemtsov murdered while he, according to police, was strolling with a Ukrainian woman whose name was withheld so as not to compromise the ongoing investigation.

The march was calm and dignified, with participants waiving Russian flags, carrying portraits of Nemtsov and refraining from shouting political slogans.

Some of the banners and portraits of Nemtsov carried the text “He fought for our future” or “heroes don’t die, those bullets are aimed at all of us”.

While some of Nemtsov’s supporters and RPR-Parnas party members and supporters would interpret that those bullets were aimed at “the opposition”, the vast majority of Russians perceives these slogan to the effect that the assassination was an assault against all of Russia and all Russian regardless of their political allegiances.

The 55-year-old Nemtsov was shot from a white car that was passing him and his female companion. Police recovered six projectiles and cartridges at the crime scene. Nemtsov was struck by four of the six projectiles which had been fired from a handgun. Police would say that the murder appeared to be a professional hit and that the assailants most likely have held Nemtsov under surveillance to be able to carry out the crime.

Nemtsov was a co-chair of the RPR-Parnas liberal democratic political party and a deputy of a regional legislature, the Yaroslavl City Duma, reports the Tass news agency. He held a number of Russian government positions in the 1990s.

The Russian Investigative Committee has launched an investigation pertaining the murder and illegal possession of arms. Both the presidency, the FSB, and the Interior Ministry are actively involved in the investigation.

Russian President Vladimir Putin was woken up Saturday night, conveyed his condolences to those near Nemtsov, and stressed that he would personally oversee the investigation. Nemtov’s burial will be held on March 3 at Moscow’s Troyekurovskoye Cemetery.
