A MUSEUM’S smelly 100kg whale skull has been found after it went missing from a Tasmanian beach.
The Bryde’s whale became the property of the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) when it washed up at Ralphs Bay, near Hobart, in February.
Its skull disappeared just days before it was due to be picked up, despite being labelled as museum property while it was left to dry out.
TMAG’s Kathryn Medlock says she was tipped off about its whereabouts.
“Somebody rang me up and said, ‘I think I know where it is’,” Ms Medlock told AAP.
“It wasn’t the person who took it from the beach.”
Staff had taken lifting equipment and a ute to a property to pick the piece up.
It has not been damaged and will now be put in a specially made compost mixture to continue drying out.
The subtropical species is found rarely in Tasmanian waters and the skeleton will be the first of a Bryde’s whale in TMAG’s collection.
Ms Medlock said the museum was only keen for the piece to be returned and would not pursue legal action.
“People don’t realise,” she said.
“Someone probably just thought it would look nice in the garden or something.”
