Commander Jose Luis Sanchez, 41, made his first appearance in a San Diego courtroom after being arrested on November 6 in Florida and charged with accepting bribes from Glenn Defense Marine Asia in exchange for classified Navy information.
Judge David Bartick upheld a $100,000 bail for Sanchez and ordered him to continue wearing a GPS tracking device.
Sanchez is due back in court in December. Two other senior US Navy officials have also been charged separately for accepting bribes.
“According to the allegations in this case, a number of officials were willing to sacrifice their integrity and millions of taxpayer dollars for personal gratification,” US Attorney Laura Duffy said.
Sanchez is accused of being paid the bribes in return for sensitive information he gave to Leonard Glenn Francis of Malaysia, the chief executive officer of Glenn Defense Marine Asia and making recommendations to benefit Francis’ company, a longtime US government contractor based in Singapore that provides hundreds of millions of dollars of supply services for the US Navy in at least a dozen countries throughout the Pacific.
