The Nepalese government summoned the high-ranking British diplomat on Friday to protest the arrest of colonel Kumar Lama in the UK capital over allegations of torture linked to his alleged actions during the South Asian country’s civil war.
Nepalese Foreign Minister Narayan Kaji Shrestha said Britain is breaching its sovereignty by carrying out the arrest, demanding the immediate release of the army colonel.
“We express strong objection to this mistake and urge that it be corrected,” the BBC quoted Shrestha as saying.
“The arrest of Lama … without informing the concerned government and without any evidence, is against the general principle of international law and jurisdiction of a sovereign country.”
The 46-year-old Nepalese colonel was arrested while he was on vacation on January 3 at an address in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex of England, over alleged torture charges relating to the Nepal’s civil war in 2005.
The details of the alleged offense have not been made clear, but British authorities claim “universal jurisdiction” over offenses such as torture, war crimes, and hostage taking.
Nepal officials also said Lama is serving as a military observer under the United Nations (UN) Mission in Southern Sudan.
