Israel’s right-far-right coalition government has long struggled with internal cohesion when faced with peace, but the ongoing Gaza War seemingly is complicating matters too, at least now that peace threatens to break out at some point in the future.
Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, unashamed in his opposition to peace as such, is loudly condemning efforts to broker a ceasefire, and is pushing for a full-scale ground invasion and permanent conquest of the Gaza Strip.
Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon went even further, mocking Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for his “feeble” war against the strip, not nearly bloody enough for his taste. Netanyahu has sacked Danon, an influential Likud member, in a move that threatens to renew internal party tensions.
Lieberman is a tougher matter to deal with, as while his Yisrael Beiteinu faction has already split from Likud they cannot practically be expelled from the coalition without forcing new elections, meaning he is effectively untouchable politically.
