Recently exciting news from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden has made surprisingly little noise in American media outlets. Scientists with the Karolinska Institute have discovered a new molecule which zeros in on a particular type of brain cancer cell causing them to “explode”.
The amazing results from the Institute were recently published in the journal Cell.
Scientists with the Karolinska Institute took cancer cells from a particular type of brain cancer, a glioblastoma. They exposed it to over 200 different potential molecules. Scientists then looked for whatever might have had adverse effects on the cells.
Glioblastoma – specifically glioblastoma multiforme – is the most aggressive form of brain cancer known. Life expectancy is exceedingly low, even with treatment. Of the 200 different potential molecules, however, one molecule was extremely interesting and exciting results.
The molecule is named Vacquinol-1. It induced a process termed vacuolization, where substances are taken up from the outside of the cell. It then deforms the cell membrane into pockets inside the cell which are known as vacuoles.
The massive accumulation of vacuoles caused the cell membrane to eventually collapse. This resulted in the cancer cell eventually exploding, and the cancer dying.
Stay tuned for more news on this exciting development!
