Jolly good: another green wall has popped up in London. This one is right near the Eurostar Terminal, so if you happen to be hopping the train to or from Paris, take a look.
The garden is a long horizontal creation, covering two walls, on the side of an old gas building. Designed by Biotecture, it’s not the most exciting (see below for the best) but it’s a lovely addition to an area that is full of traffic and sorely lacking in green space.

The planting on this one follows the horizontal lines of the building: there are five wavy bands. A happy result of the recent sun is that the two walls are in full bloom. There are lovely little pink geranium flowers, bergenia and heuchera in blossom.

Here’s how they start: the wall is covered with a waterproof backing liner to protect the wall and then a drainage layer is added. Panels are installed containing the growing medium, then the plants are put in, drainage and lastly, finishing off the wall and integrating it with the building. The walls have to be watered daily; they use approximately 1 litre of water per day.

Meanwhile, the wall that was installed last November in another location is thriving: it’s gorgeous and a living work of art. The painterly aspects of the planting are now clear. There are curving criss-cross swaths that are in bloom. Pretty soon the geraniums will pop.

Presently there are grasses, lavender flowers, silvery lamb’s ears, small purple flowers and heuchera flowers in full bloom.
