On Tuesday, an estimated 5,000 protesters formed a three-mile-long line starting from Wall Street to Union Square along Broadway, in a move aimed at drawing attention to the country’s long line of jobless people.
“We are forming a single line to represent the 14 million unemployed in America. It’s a representation of an unemployment line, the longest unemployment line in the world,” rally organizer, Yana Landowne said.
The protesters also carried pink slips, which is typically associated with job layoffs.
The event organized by activists from a variety of groups including Occupy Wall Street also coincides with Super Tuesday.
Super Tuesday is the most critical day in the presidential race in terms of finding a Republican challenger to President Barack Obama in the November sixth election.
The Occupy movement owes its inspiration to the Occupy Wall Street (OWS) protests, which began when a group of demonstrators gathered in New York’s financial district on September 17, 2011 to protest the excessive influence of big corporations on official US policies and the high-level corruption in the country.
