NickMom declares ‘Greatest TV Mom’: Who’s the queen and who was missing?

NickMom recently declared a winner in the quest to name the “Greatest TV Mom.” It started with a bracket and 16 names (March Madness of a different variety, anyone?), but there could only be one.

We’ll be taking a look at the 16 names they put up for the illustrious title of Greatest TV Mom, until uncovering their declared title-holder as of April 8, 2013. It’s a near certainty that there will be times this TV Moms Examiner will beg to differ and we’ll definitely throw out some names that we think were worthy of being included in the running. For now, though, let’s take a look at who made the cut…

Upon examining the bracket of the 16 TV moms that were competing for Greatest TV Mom it seemed that some of the comparisons were a little…Well, hard to compare. But that’s what NickMom asked their readers to do, and by golly they delivered. On one side of the bracket there was Roseanne Conner – “Roseanne,” Marie Barone – “Everybody Loves Raymond,” Tami Taylor – “Friday Night Lights,” Jill Taylor – “Home Improvement,” Angela Bower – “Who’s the Boss,” Clair Huxtable – “The Cosby Show,” Carmela Soprano – “The Sopranos,” Kitty Foreman – “That ‘70s Show.” On the other side of the bracket vying for the title were Ma Ingalls – “The Little House On the Prairie,” June Cleaver – “Leave It To Beaver,” Lucy Ricardo – “I Love Lucy,” Marion Cunningham – “Happy Days,” Marge Simpson – “The Simpsons,” Gloria Pritchett – “Modern Family,” Carol Brady – “The Brady Bunch,” and Shirley Partridge – “The Partridge Family.”

  • In the first round Roseanne Conner (Roseanne Barr), "Roseanne," took on Marie Barone (Doris Roberts) of "Everybody Loves Raymond," an interesting match-up for sure. Ultimately Marie's overbearing apron-string-attached parenting style couldn't stand up against Roseanne's "real mom/real world" vibe, and it was Roseanne who would move on to the next round. What do you think? Did the right mom advance through the bracket? 
  • Next in line was Taylor vs. Taylor - Tami (Connie Britton) and Jill (Patricia Richardson), respectively of "Friday Night Lights" and "Home Improvement" fame. This match-up would go on to battle the winner of Roseanne vs. Marie Barone...Tim 'The Tool Man' Taylor's bride, Jill would take that challenge. Roseanne proved to be a difficult TV mom to tackle, as Jill ended up being the second TV mom to fall to Roseanne's popularity. Did the right TV mom advance through the bracket? 
  • Our next TV moms to face off were powerhouse TV moms of the 1980s, "Who's the Boss's" Angela Bower (Judith Light) and Clair Huxtable (Phylicia Rashad) of "The Cosby Show." Both sitcoms are certainly beloved to many a TV fan, but when Clair Huxtable is in the running, it's hardly a fair fight. Clair's fierce TV mom style ended up knocking Angela out in the first round. Do you think the right TV mom advanced? 
  • One of the most intriguing and questionable match-ups of them all pitted "That '70s Show" Kitty Forman (Debra Jo Rupp) against "The Sopranos" Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco). In what seemed to be a case of comparing apples to oranges, Kitty would ultimately best Carmela to move on to the next round. By moving on, Kitty found herself facing the indomitable force that is Claire Huxtable of "The Cosby Show." Definitely some tough competition. Claire ended up besting Kitty in this round and would move forward to face... 
  • On the other side of the bracket, things got started with Ma Ingalls (Karen Grassle) of "Little House on the Prairie" taking on the TV mom from which all other TV moms were seemingly created, June Cleaver (Barbara Billingsley) of "Leave It to Beaver." In what this TV Moms Examiner deems an incredible upset, Ma Ingalls ultimately bested the Beave's mom to move on to the next round. Keep clicking to see who Ma Ingalls would have to face next...
  • Next in line, with the winner taking on Ma Ingalls, NickMom matched Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball), "I Love Lucy," with Marion Cunningham (Marion Ross) of "Happy Days." Perhaps one of the better match ups in the bracket, only one classic TV mom could emerge victorious from this round, and that battling lady would (naturally?) be the quirky, the fabulous Lucy. In her face-off with Ma Ingalls Lucy's considerable charm wasn't enough to keep her in the running, as Ma Ingalls proved to be a tough opponent.   • Next in line on the bracket came the first and only cartoon TV mom to throw her hat into the ring. "The Simpsons" Marge Simpson (voice by Julie Kayner) would take on "Modern Family's" Gloria Pritchett (Sofia Vergara). While this match-up might seem unfair on the outside looking in, Marge has the benefit of having decades on the air "proving" herself in the land of TV moms. Definitely tough to compete against, so tough that she would knock Gloria out in the first round. The question remained, though, how would Marge measure up against either Carol Brady or Shirley Partridge?   • Another excellent match-up of TV moms had musical moms Carol Brady (Florence Henderson) of "The Brady Bunch" and Shirley Partridge (Shirley Jones) of "The Partridge Family facing off. Who would emerge victorious and ready to take on the challenge of taking on the lone cartoon mom on the bracket? None other than Carol Brady. Would Carol's folksy charm be enough to knock Marge Simpson out of the running? Incredibly, no, Marge would go on to fight another round. At this point Marge needed to beat Ma Ingalls in order to face Roseanne in the championship, but the warm and fuzzy memories of Ma Ingalls had fans keeping her in the running. ...And then there were two. Who would it be? Ma Ingalls from the Prairie or tough TV mom Roseanne Conner? Click on to find out...
  • Only one remained and only one could emerge victorious and be granted the title of "Greatest TV Mom." In a hard fought battle with over 120 comments arguing their point, Roseanne would be crowned the reigning Queen of TV mom awesomeness. On April 8, 2013 NickMom declared Roseanne Conner as the "Greatest TV Mom." With so many TV moms spanning decades it's nearly impossible to pick just one, especially when they all bring something so unique to the table. Roseanne the Greatest TV Mom? Maybe, but we've got a few other outstanding TV moms that we'd like to toss into consideration...
  • When looking for the "Greatest TV Mom" we think that these six moms deserved to be in the running. The TV Moms Examiner's 'Greatest TV Mom's' Honorable Mentions: Lorelei Gilmore (Lauren Graham) - This single mom won us over on "Gilmore Girls" with her fast-talking, loving, enviable relationship with daughter, Rory. She was a mom with seemingly endless energy and we loved her as much for her relationship with her daughter as for the struggles she had in her relationship with her own mom. Kristina Braverman (Monica Potter) - Just one of many TV moms on NBC's "Parenthood," we think that Kristina deserved a shot at the title because she's so relatable as a TV mom. She's patient, until she's awesomely not, she's loving, and she would do anything for her kids. Reba Hart (Reba McEntire) - With reruns of "Reba" found on CMT, ABC Family, and Lifetime it's pretty easy to remember why Reba deserved a spot on that bracket. Faced with all kinds of challenges, she took on those things with humor and grace, and frankly, when she has her heart-to-hearts with her kids, we kind of want to write her pearls down for future reference. Annie Camden (Catherine Hicks) - This Pastor's wife and mom of seven deserves to have been in the running for Greatest TV Mom because she just kind of was. Loving, patient, full of follow through, and generally just outstanding, of course she should have had a shot at the title!Miss Ella (Cassi Davis) - "Tyler Perry's House of Payne's" Miss Ella dealt with her goofy husband and crazy (yet loving) family with faith, grace, and wisdom. She's a TV mom we all wish we could be more like. Haley James Scott (Bethany Joy Lenz) - This "One Tree Hill" TV mom certainly had a rough spot after her mom died, but other than that she was a mom we all wanted to be. Calm, patient, fun, creative, and understanding, she has all the makings for a TV mom worthy of being considered for Greatest TV Mom. Perhaps a little young to seal the deal, but still a girl should get a chance to try, right? These are just six TV moms that we couldn't bear to see not mentioned - even if they're just our honorable mentions, who would you have liked to see have a chance to be crowned "Greatest TV Mom?"
