“Unfortunately there’s been a lot of claims that reforms are being done but we don’t see them being delivered,” said Ana Gomes, a member of the European Parliament’s foreign affairs and human rights committees.
“In the end, what we see is indeed brutality, appalling behavior toward those who are bravely there to protest peacefully for the basic rights of the people of Bahrain.”
Gomes made the comments in an interview with Press TV on Monday.
The EU diplomat was denied entry to Bahrain on Sunday in spite of the fact that she held a diplomatic passport.
Gomes said she was held at Bahrain International Airport in the capital Manama for over seven hours.
“I was not expecting that I would be meeting with the denial of the visa. I applied for a visa at the entrance, which is a regular procedure.”
“I can only say that I am very worried. It’s not my inconvenience that matters. It’s indeed what I’m hearing from human rights activists here in Bahrain,” Gomes added.
She was on her way to Libya and wanted to enter Bahrain for a stopover when she was refused permission to stay overnight.
The EU diplomat also stated that she will be “reporting this to all authorities” in the European Parliament and that she will also call for Bahraini authorities to “be accountable for the way they treat the Bahraini citizens.”
