For 12 hours last month two Russian strategic bombers flew close to the sovereign air space of Great Britain in the English Channel, failing to communicate with either London or NATO before or during the provocation.
The Jan. 28 incident involving long-range T-95s ignited a war of diplomatic protests and counter-protests. The two Tu-95s were only 25 miles away from British air space.
The Russian gambit spooked British civil aviation. Several passenger flights were ordered to alter flight paths to avoid accidents with the Russian bombers.
The British Royal Air Force scrambled Typhoon fighter jets to accompany and monitor the Tu-95 throughout the entire incident.
