NEW YORK CITY — A man by the name of Dr. Craig Spencer, who recently traveled from West Africa and Europe, was placed into isolation Thursday at Bellevue Hospital, inside the infectious disease ward, after officials were alerted that he may potentially be infected with the deadly Ebola virus which has already claimed at least one life in America.
Doctors and CDC officials are now awaiting test results to actually determine if the man is infected or not. But according to the New York Times a team of “disease detectives” are going around rounding up people whom Spencer may have made contact with. Reports also indicate that officials have been reluctant to release the number of people who may have potentially came in contact with Spencer, and likely for good reason.
According to Marc Santora reporting for the New York Times, “Dr. Spencer began to feel sluggish on Tuesday but did not develop a fever until Thursday morning, he told the authorities. At 11 a.m., the doctor found that he had a 103-degree temperature and alerted the staff of Doctors Without Borders, according to the official.
The staff of Doctors Without Borders called the city’s health department, which in turn called the Fire Department.
Emergency medical workers, wearing full personal protective gear, were dispatched to Dr. Spencer’s apartment, on West 147th Street. He was transported to Bellevue and arrived shortly after 1 p.m.”
All of this is not good news obviously, as it was also reported by Santora that Dr. Spencer visited a Brooklyn bowling alley, took a ride on the subway and even caught a taxi Wednesday evening. That’s what has officials on edge.
It’s also worthy to note that USA Today reported:
Spencer is on the staff at New York-Presbyterian Hospital, which released a statement on Thursday night saying “he has not been to work at our hospital and has not seen any patients at our hospital since his return from overseas.”
A video posted on YouTube by the New York Post also indicates that Dr. Spencer may have been escorted by police to the hospital in a convoy containing several emergency response vehicles. Although some reports maintain the man quarantined himself.
