NYC rally slams war rhetoric on Iran

The protesters gathered outside the offices of US Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand to condemn their support of a war on Iran over its nuclear energy program.

“The reason we are here now is that Schumer and Gillibrand just recently voted through Senate resolution 380, which is basically encouraging [US President Barack] Obama any time you are ready go to war … they are really talking at pushing him to do Israel’s work,” one of the protesters told Press TV.

“That’s why we are here. And American people don’t know that to attack a country that has done you no harm is a war crime, and even threatening Iran by Israel and the US all the time is a violation of international law,” another protester noted.

In February, Sens. Joseph Lieberman, Robert Casey, and Lindsey Graham introduced Senate Resolution 380, which recommends that the US attack Iran to prevent the Islamic Republic from acquiring what the resolution called a “nuclear weapons capability.”

The resolution says it is “a vital national interest” of the United States to stop Iran from acquiring the capability.

The proposal also encourages increased diplomatic and economic pressure on Iran to secure an agreement from the Islamic Republic that includes “the full and sustained suspension of all uranium enrichment-related and reprocessing activities.”

The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Iran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and Tel Aviv using the pretext to threaten Iran with a ‘military option.’

Over the past few months, the war rhetoric against Iran has gained momentum.

Iran rejects allegations of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy program, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency, it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
