Why imagine how it is to be a septuagenarian decades before you reach that age when there’s a suit that lets you experience the difficulties of being old? Similar to the Mommy Tummy that simulates pregnancy, MIT’s Age Gain Now Empathy System (AGNES) transforms your body into that of a 75-year-old.
AGNES is a full-body suit that uses braces and rubber bands to restrict the movements of the wearer. The full ensemble includes a helmet that curves the spine, hazy glasses that make small prints hard to read, ear plugs that limit audibility, and gloves that lessens the strength and mobility of the hands and wrists.
MIT’s AgeLab developed AGNES so young marketers and designers can experience firsthand the physical limitations of older people. Joseph Coughlin of AgeLab says, “The business of old age demands new tools. While focus groups and observations and surveys can help you understand what the older consumer needs and wants, young marketers never get that ‘Ah ha!’ moment of having difficulty opening a jar, or getting in and out of a car. That’s what AGNES provides.”
Of course, not everyone’s going to end up like AGNES in their 70s. Coughlin likens AGNES to an old lady who didn’t eat well and eschewed exercise in her youth. So aside from the suit’s primary purpose, he believes it could also be used to motivate people into taking better care of their bodies.
