“I am traumatized by the screams of the sea lion Fernandez,” says the 80-year-old Ms. Nevenzeel in Amsterdam. “I am of Jewish descent and had to go into hiding during the war. Now I have to go into hiding again.”
In 2010, it was a beautiful summer at Entropotdok in Amsterdam. “It was so hot that summer”, said Nevenzeel, “but I could not open my doors.” Every time Nevenzeel and her 84-year-old husband wanted to enjoy the sun, their peace was disturbed by the cries of the sea lion Fernandez. The male sea lion, who had been transferred from the zoo in Berlin, made its mating calls. “The whole day he shouted. We were quite disturbed.”
Fernandez was moved in March to another zoo, but the fear in Nevenzeel’s house remained. The old Jewess has contacted the municipality and the police.
