The Summer Olympics start July 27 in London, and the merchandising has begun. In this case, with the Acer Iconia Tab A510 “Olympic Game Edition,” which was previewed by Mashable’s Peter Pachal earlier and is available exclusively from Acer‘s Web store.
Besides the Iconia Tab, early reports suggest a Samsung event to be held May 3 in London might introduce an Olympic-themed smartphone as well. Here’s a look at both devices.
The Acer Iconia Tab
Acer uses this brand name for its basic, no-frills Android tablet. No frills doesn’t mean it lacks processing power, though. The A510 has an NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor clocked at 1.3 GHz, plus 1 GB of RAM, which means games and apps will run smoothly and you’ll be able to switch quickly between them.
Besides that, it has a roughly iPad-sized 10.1 inch screen, as well as the requisite basic Android tablet features, like front- and rear-facing cameras and a microSD card slot. It also has an HDMI out port and supports Bluetooth accessories, so you can connect it up to an HDTV and use an external keyboard if you like. Finally, it runs the latest Ice Cream Sandwich version of Google’s open-source Android operating system. Ice Cream Sandwich is much more stable than last year’s Honeycomb tablet version, and features numerous graphical and design upgrades over the old, bare-bones smartphone versions.
Olympic-themed features
What makes this Tab the Olympic variety? Primarily, the back of the tablet features the Olympic rings, displayed prominently and at about the same size as Acer’s logo. According to Mashable, Acer says “it’s ideal for rooting for your favorite athletes at the games,” but there’s no word on exactly what makes it better than other tablets for that … or whether Acer considers rooting your tablet to be a way to cheer athletes on.
The Samsung Galaxy S III
Samsung is being mysterious about its upcoming “Unpacked” event, to be held on May 3, which Boy Genius Report’s Zach Epstein says was tagged “Come and meet the next galaxy”. The Galaxy S II was one of Samsung’s best-selling smartphones, and one of the most powerful phones out there, but it’s not Samsung’s only “Galaxy” branded product; the Galaxy Nexus debuted Ice Cream Sandwich, the Galaxy Tab is Samsung’s name for its tablet lineup, and the Galaxy Note is its 5.3-inch tablet-phone hybrid.
Still, the Galaxy S II was probably the most popular of all the above devices, and the one fans are most clamoring for a sequel to. And BGR’s Jonathan Geller says “We have been told” that the Galaxy S III will be the official device of the Olympics, and will be sold internationally to promote them. No one’s sure yet what it will be like, but reports suggest it will have high-end specs including a 1080p HD display, as well as a possible “eye tracking” feature that will lock the phone when you look away from it.
