On Thursday, the OPCW published a statement on its website saying that it wanted to identify companies for disposing of chemicals and other materials “associated with the destruction of Syrian chemical weapons.”
Russia and the United States agreed on a deal on September 14, under which Syria would have its chemical weapons eliminated.
The deal came after days of war rhetoric by the United States against Syria.
Washington and some of its allies accused the Syrian government of being responsible for a fatal chemical attack on the outskirts of Damascus on August 21. However, Damascus strongly rejected the allegation and said foreign-sponsored militants had carried out the attack to draw in military intervention.
The OPCW asked private companies to help with the destruction of two-thirds of Syria’s chemical weapons. The organization said that 798 tons of chemicals and 7.7 million liters of effluent needed to be disposed.
It called on companies “interested in participating in a potential tendering process” to approach the OPCW.
On November 15, the OPCW Executive Council approved a final roadmap for the destruction of the chemical weapons stockpile. Under the deal, the chemical weapons would be removed from Syria and destroyed in the “safest and soonest manner.”
The request by the OPCW comes as no country has so far volunteered to allow Syrian chemical weapons to be destroyed on its soil.
