“To maintain discipline in the military, it must have been necessary at that time,” the Independent quoted the conservative politician as telling reporters on Monday.
The co-head of the newly formed Japan Restoration Party also said the system was necessary for the Japanese soldiers to get some rest.
It is believed that up to 200,000 women, mainly from the Korean Peninsula and China, were forced to serve as prostitutes – euphemistically called comfort women – for Japanese soldiers in military brothels.
Yonhap news agency cited an unidentified South Korean official as voicing “disappointment” at the comments made by the young politician.
Hashimoto “revealed a serious lack of a historical understanding and respect for women’s rights,” the Korean official regretted.
Asian countries who suffered Japan’s aggression during the WWII remain critical of Japan for failing to fully compensate for its wartime atrocities.
Hashimo’s remarks come in the face of mounting criticism against the conservative government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe for a possible revision of Japan’s past apologies for wartime crimes.
Before taking office in December, Abe had advocated revising a 1993 statement by former Prime Minister Yohei Kono acknowledging and expressing remorse for the suffering caused to the sexual slaves of Japanese troops.
But on Tuesday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga moved to distance the government from the controversial remarks.
“The stance of the Japanese government on the comfort women issue is well known. They have suffered unspeakably painful experiences. The Abe Cabinet has the same sentiments as past cabinets,” he told reporters.
