Pakistan parties block NATO supply line

The blockade was imposed on Saturday by several parties, including the Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) party, which runs the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government, and Jamaat-e-Islami.

The parties said the move came in protest against US drone strikes in the region.

On November 5, lawmakers belonging to Tehreek-e-Insaf party passed a resolution threatening to block NATO supply routes by November 20 unless Washington stops its drone strikes.

On Thursday, six people were killed in a US drone attack on a seminary in the Hangu district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

Following the attack, Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry issued a statement, saying US drone attacks are a violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The statement added that the airstrikes have negative impacts on Islamabad’s efforts to bring peace to the country.

Imran Khan, the leader of Tehreek-e-Insaf party, also called for Pakistan to block NATO supply routes to Afghanistan in response to continued drone strikes.

“If it’s in our hand we will block it today. Our powers are that we can tell them that NATO supply can’t pass through our province,” he said.

The US carries out assassination drone strikes in several Muslim countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen, and Somalia. Washington claims the airstrikes target militants but many civilians have lost their lives so far in the attacks.

The Pakistani government closed the border crossings used to transfer supplies to the US-led foreign forces in neighboring Afghanistan in late 2011, after 24 Pakistani soldiers were killed in a US airstrike in the border region.

The deadly incident heightened tensions between Islamabad and Washington. Pakistan called for a US apology, which was snubbed by Washington.

Islamabad, however, agreed to reopen the NATO supply routes to Afghanistan on July 3 after the then US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton apologized to Islamabad in a statement over the killing of the soldiers.
