Pakistan wraps up election campaign

Imran Khan, the bed-ridden leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), called on Pakistanis to unite for a change on the final day of election campaign.

“God has given you this golden opportunity. Don’t let it go. You should give change a chance,” the former cricket star told thousands of supporters via video link in the capital Islamabad on Thursday.

Khan was hospitalized after falling off a mechanical lift that was raising him onto a stage at an election rally in the eastern city of Lahore on Tuesday.

Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) is gaining momentum in opinion polls, also addressed his last day rally in Lahore.

Campaigning was marred by a wave of violence and militancy sweeping across the country.

On Thursday, unidentified gunmen kidnapped Ali Haider Gilani, the son of former Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, at an election rally for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the central city of Multan. He is contesting for a seat in the Punjab provincial assembly.

The gunmen also opened fire at the political gathering, killing one person and injuring several others.

On the same day, pro-Taliban militants issued a statement calling for bombings and attacks in several parts of Pakistan to undermine the elections.

Pakistan is preparing to hold its National Assembly elections on May 11. The National Assembly has a total of 342 members, 272 of which are elected by the popular vote. The last National Assembly elections were held in February 2008.

Pakistan will also hold elections for 577 seats of the provincial assemblies on the same day.
