Palmer erects billboard in Swan’s seat

Mining magnate Clive Palmer has made his presence known in Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan’s seat of Lilley.

The billionaire features in a billboard erected on Sandgate Road in Virginia on Monday.

The roadside advertisement, featuring a smiling Mr Palmer with two thumbs up against a bright yellow background, is in one of the main thoroughfares of Mr Swan’s north Brisbane electorate.

Mr Palmer has previously announced an expression of interest to contest the Liberal National Party (LNP) preselection for Lilley to take on Mr Swan at the next federal election.

The billboard, which features no party branding, displays only his name and the slogan “Together we can achieve the extraordinary”.

A spokesman for Mr Palmer says Lilley residents can expect to see a lot more of him, even if not in person.

“This billboard is to let the people of Lilley know they have alternatives to Wayne Swan at the next federal election,” the spokesman said in a statement.

“More billboards will be on display in the electorate in coming weeks.”

The federal election will be held on or before November 30 next year.

Mr Swan said he was not surprised Mr Palmer was “arrogantly” using his wealth to try to buy Lilley.

“Many people are starting to say this is a publicity stunt by Mr Palmer,” Mr Swan said in a statement.

“I think he’ll eventually pull out of the contest and run away at a hundred miles an hour.

“If he doesn’t run, it’ll be the most humiliating backdown of his career.”
