Parents of slain US teen demand justice

Trayvon Martin’s parents spoke briefly Tuesday at a Capitol Hill forum that began with a moment of silence for their son. Martin’s parents believe their son was a victim of racial profiling, AFP reported.

The teen’s father, Tracy Martin, thanked “everyone who’s been supportive of our family, everyone who’s helped us stand tall, everyone who’s holding the legacy and making sure that he did not indeed die in vain” at a forum on racial profiling and hate crimes.

“We’ll continue to fight for justice,” he said.

Trayvon’s mother, Sybrina Fulton, thanked the crowd for their support. “As I said before, Trayvon was our son, but Trayvon was your son,” she said.

Zimmerman, a watch guard, shot dead Martin on February 26 near his house, claiming that he killed the teen in self-defense. He has claimed that the victim punched him, knocked him to the ground and slammed his head into the pavement repeatedly before he fired the gunshot.

The lead homicide investigator in the case has recommended that Zimmerman be charged with manslaughter. But the state attorney’s office says there’s not enough evidence to back that charge.

A grand jury, however, is set to decide whether to charge Zimmerman with murder on April 10.

Martin’s death has sparked public outcry and weeks of protests across the country.

This is while human rights groups insist that the shooting was racially motivated.

Trayvon’s case has again stirred serious concerns over racial discrimination against African-American communities in the US.
