Passenger ship sinks off S Korea coast

Dozens of rescue boats and helicopters are scrambling to save lives as a ferry with around 450 passengers, mostly high school students, onboard is sinking off South Korea’s southern coast.

The 6,825-ton ferry, identified as the Sewol, sailed out of the western port of Incheon on Tuesday evening, and ran into trouble some 20 kilometers (13 miles) off the island of Byungpoong on Wednesday.

Among the passengers, 325 were high school students who were traveling with several teachers to the resort island of Jeju for a four-day trip. There were around 20 crew members on board as well.

The ferry sent out a distress signal at around 9:00 a.m. local time on Wednesday (0000 GMT) with passenger testimony suggesting it may have run aground.

“We heard a big thumping sound and the boat stopped,” one passenger said.

Dozens of passengers have already been lifted off and all remaining on the stricken ship have been told to jump into the sea to await rescue.

Vice Minister of Security and Public Administration Lee Gyeong-og told a televised news conference in Seoul that a total of 34 naval, coastguard and civilian ships together with 18 helicopters are involved in the rescue operations.

Lee further confirmed that 161 people have been rescued so far.

Meanwhile, President Park Geun-hye has also ordered coast guard commandos to be mobilized to search the ship.

South Korea’s coastguard has confirmed one death from the sinking ferry.

“We have recovered one body from the ship so far,” a coastguard spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

Hundreds of ferries cruise the waters between the South Korean mainland and its multiple offshore islands every day.

In October 1993, nearly 300 people died when a ferry capsized off the western coast of the East Asian country.
