Paul voted top GOP pick for 2016 poll

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul received the most votes in the annual straw poll taken at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday as the preferred Republican presidential nominee for the 2016 vote.

Many attendees in the conference displayed “Stand with Rand” stickers, aiming to highlight the senator’s recent 13-hour speech on the US Senate Chamber strongly censuring Obama administration’s targeted killing policy of secret use of assassination drones by the CIA spy agency and its military to kill suspected ‘American enemies.’

Although the policy has come under strong criticism by many US lawmakers, politicians and columnists, Senator Paul has been the most vocal opponent of the plan that has variously been described as illegal, lacking legislative oversight and unconstitutional.

Paul came on top from a list of 23 names on this year’s ballot, capturing 25 percent of the vote, narrowly defeating younger Florida Senator Marco Rubio, who got 23 percent of the vote, followed by the hawkish, pro-Israeli ex-senator and 2012 presidential candidate, Rick Santorum.

During his Thursday’s address to the conference, Paul described the “old” Republican Party as “stale and moss-covered,” noting “our party is encumbered by an inconsistent approach to freedom.”

“The new GOP will need to embrace liberty in the economic and the personal sphere,” He added.

Most of the nearly 3,000 that cast ballots and participated in the three-day Republican conference in a Washington, DC suburb were reportedly between the ages of 18 and 25 and electing Senator Paul was reflective of their libertarian inclination.
