Peru court asks UK pair over drug cartel

On Tuesday, prosecutor Juan Mendoza said Michaella McCollum, born in North Ireland, and Melissa Reid, from Scotland have “got to shed light” on who the other drug traffickers that helped them are, if they want a reduced sentence of six years and eight months in prison as opposed to the full eight years.

“Prosecutors do not believe that they alone took a plane from Spain to Peru, bought drugs and then tried to go back to Europe. They have got to give details about the members of the group they worked with,” Mendoza said.

Up until they confessed of being guilty as charged, the pair pleaded innocent and claimed a drugs cartel had impelled them to carry out the smuggle.

The undecided sentence for the two twenty-year-old women has been taking place in a court in the western Peruvian port city of Callao.

Police arrested them on August 6 at the international airport in Lima. As they were about to board a plane for Spain, 5.7 kilos of cocaine were found in McCollum’s belongings and 5.8 kilograms in Reid’s.
