The 26-year-old “La Tapageuse” vessel is due to arrive in the country by April next year, a coastguard statement said on Saturday.
“This French vessel is multi-functional and it would be a major contribution to our fleet, particularly in our search and rescue operations,” coastguard chief Rear Admiral Rodolfo Isorena said.
Isorena also said that the country is finalizing a deal with the French government to buy four brand-new 24-metre and one 82-metre multipurpose vessels.
The Philippines, which has one of the most poorly equipped militaries in the region, is also receiving military aid as well as various types of military equipment form the US.
Albert Del Rosario, the Philippines’ foreign minister said on Wednesday that Washington would increase its military assistance package from $30 million to about $50 million for the next fiscal year.
Del Rosario also said that US spy planes were providing crucial intelligence on Chinese military activities in disputed areas of the South China Sea.
China and the Philippines have had recurring standoffs over the disputed territories of the South China Sea. China claims nearly all of the sea, even waters close to the Philippines and other neighbors.
The competing claims to the strategically vital waters have long made the area one of Asia’s potential flashpoints for military conflict.
