Peter Nolan A pit bull mix, who bit a Petaluma, Calif., firefighter, was destined to be killed…that is, until she was better evaluated, and officials made the decision that her life was worth sparing, reported Thursday’s Press-Democrat.
Five-year-old “Indi,” bit a firefighter who was tending to one of her family members and afterwards, she was put into a 10-day quarantine at the Petaluma Animal Shelter.
During her stay, she proved herself to be a docile, friendly dog who showed no signs of aggression.
Indi had been ordered to be destroyed at the end of her quarantine, but she was evaluated by a Santa Rosa trainer by the name of Mary Quinn, who determined that the dog was a good candidate for rehabilitation.
Initially, the determination had been made that the bite to the firefighter’s leg was serious enough to warrant Indi’s destruction, but the shelter director admitted later, that the bite situation was “not as significant,” as was initially believed.
After the bite, in review of what took place that day, animal control officials acknowledged that it was a stressful situation for the dog, who was reacting to strangers who had entered her home.
Quinn will be working with Indi, and her guardian, to help better manage her protective nature.
